I'm putting a pair of covers up online for potential readers to vote on. So here's the previous alternate history news, below.
First American Baby Born on Mars
The joint American / French permanent colony on Mars had some exciting news yesterday when two of the residents, Mary and Charles Josephson, welcomed a new addition to their family. Mary and Charles have lived in the colony for almost five years at this point, joining the settlement when Mary was recruited as a computer specialist for the colony. The colony, founded in 2000, is a self-contained, enclosed settlement on Mars that recycles its own air and water and has recently achieved self-sufficiency in food by producing its own wheat and corn under artificial lights. Cows, chickens, and pigs are also kept on the colony. Although the child, Arielle, is the first American child born on the settlement, two French citizens have been born there over the past two years. The total population of the settlement is now 457. About one third of the residents there currently are working on the construction and continued expansion of the colony. Community planners anticipate a population of five thousand by 2025.
